Veritas Gathered: Preparing for Sunday – February 2nd, 2014

SERMON

This weeks text is Matthew 6:19-21. In this text Jesus advises us to lay up treasures in heaven rather than on earth. It is so easy to “check out” when it comes to sermons about money and posessions because it can often be hard to distinguish the difference between guilt and conviction. Join us as we look at this parable from Jesus and consider how money and possessions are just one more vehicle in which we experience the Gospel and its redeeming qualities.

LITURGY

C: Jesus, my Savior, I am helpless in my sin. Cause my heart to rely only on you, knowing that you alone can satisfy my feeble heart and rescue me from my depravity.
L: Let your mercy follow me while I live, call me to repentance, and give me aid to resign myself to your will. Take my heart and hold it in your hand; mold it into your likeness and write upon it a reverence to you with an inscription that time and eternity cannot erase.
C: To your grace and your covenant I commit myself.
L: You have overcome the world, fulfilled the law, finished justifying righteousness, swallowed up death in victory, and saved us from the powers of evil.
C: I confess my continual need for your grace and rejoice in the vast depths of Your mercy in which I find peace and restoration! Amen
– adapted from The Valley of Vision: A Collection of Puritan Prayers and Devotions

This reading of confession and assurance reminds us of the one true thing that we are in need of.  It is not a lack of earthly posessions that is deathly dangerous but it is our rebellious attitude towards God that will destroy our souls.  We must continually be repentant of the sin in our lives, while at the same time remaining entirely dependent upon the grace and mercy of our God.

MUSIC

Check out this list of some of the songs we will be singing together this week:

  • “There Is A Fountain” – joyfully declares the cleansing power of Jesus’ blood!
  • “All I Have Is Christ” – a song declaring our utter dependence upon Christ.
  • “Rock Of Ages” – Declares that Jesus is the rock on which our life’s foundation should be laid.

Here is a link to a Spotify playlist.

Even though our arrangements might be slightly different, listen through these songs and see the great truths that they speak about our God and then come prepared to sing them out loudly and joyfully as a gathered church.

See you Sunday!
